Health Needs Assessment trip to Chongqing
Under the project initiative of the Public Health Train-the-Trainer Project in China’s Rural Communities (PHTT Project) in collaboration with Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation (WZQ), CCOUC organised a needs assessment trip to a remote rural village in Chongqing before the Chinese New Year.
With participants recruited by both WZQ and CCOUC, a nine-person team conducted health needs assessment in the Xingguang (星光) Village on 3-8 February 2015. Xingguang Village is located in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous Prefecture （彭水苗族土家族自治县）in eastern Chongqing, bordering Hubei Province to the east and Guizhou Province to the south. Xingguang Village was selected as one of the project villages of the PHTT Project sponsored by Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation.
Employing a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods including household questionnaire survey, focus group discussions with participatory activities, and key stakeholders interview, the team has collected information of the village relating to health situation, personal hygiene practice, water and environmental hygiene, disaster preparedness and climate change, in order to identify needs of the community. Collected data will be consolidated to inform the upcoming intervention design, and share with WZQ for their project activity design.
The WZQ-CCOUC PHTT Project aims to develop a sustainable student field participatory program model for future public health and disaster resilience building activities in WZQ’s rural China programs. The PHTT Project targets to build in-house technical capacity within WZQ/CCOUC and their associated university network among students and staff for the delivery of public health and disaster resilience interventions in a structured and professional manner.
