The 5th Belt and Road Summit

Prof Emily Chan, Prof Kevin Hung and Mr C S Wong of the CCOUC team participated in the 2-day Fifth Belt and Road Summit virtually organized by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council from 30 November to 1 December 2020.

Under the theme “A Business Vision for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future”, the annual summit gathered more than 6,000 senior government officials and business leaders from about 80 countries and regions along and beyond the Belt and Road and some 90 prominent international speakers to exchange insights on multilateral co-operation. The sub-themes for breakout sessions included creating a healthy, sustainable and inclusive future; fighting the coronavirus with innovative tech and thriving in a post-pandemic world—opportunities in the Greater Bay Area; and resilience of digital technologies in the Greater Bay Area—emerging opportunities in the new normal. Featured prominent speakers included Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of China’s National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease Professor Nanshan Zhong.

One of the aims of the summit was to find a way out of the current social and economic doldrums caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by adopting sustainable and inclusive development solutions, and examine how to navigate a clear pathway through the post-pandemic era.
