Talks at FXB Center of Harvard University

CCOUC Director Prof. Emily Chan, as a visiting scholar of the Harvard FXB Center for Health and Human Rights, was invited to share her experiences and insights on leading CCOUC to build programmes on disaster and medical humanitarian settings in China and Asia at the Work in Progress (WIP) Talk of the FXB Centre in two sessions entitled “What Have We Learned in Health and Human Security-Based Knowledge Transfer Related Programs in China and Asia?” on 6 and 7 October 2015 (http://fxb.harvard.edu/event/work-in-progress-talk-what-have-we-learned-in-health-and-human-security-based-knowledge-transfer-related-programs-in-china-and-asia/).

Members from the FXB Center and students across a spectrum of disciplines of the Harvard University attended the WIP talk. Prof. Emily Chan began her talk by first outlining some of the latest projects in disaster and medical humanitarian work CCOUC has established since April 2014 – when the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the JC School of Public Health & Primary Care at the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. After sharing the work on disaster that CCOUC has been devoting since its establishment, Prof. Emily Chan highlighted the latest development of CCOUC on medical humanitarian response. Progress on CCOUC’s works in Qinghai Province of China and some of the project sites in Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar are introduced.

The vibrant sharing and discussion serve as one important occasion for CCOUC and the FXB Center to outline and envision the blueprint of future collaborations, which form the key elements for the MOU renewed in December 2015.

This trip to Harvard has achieved another important objective related to joint course development. As part of its effort in knowledge transfer, CCOUC has invited Prof. Jennifer Leaning, Director of the FXB Center, and Prof. Elizabeth Newnham to teach the course on Health and Human Security for MPH students at JCSPHPC and some NGO partners of CCOUC in early November 2015. The course is a great success and is inspiring for participants in this novel subject in Asia.
