Presentation on best practices in reducing the health impact of climate change at Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) meeting

CCOUC Co-Director, Professor Emily Chan, gave a presentation on best practices in reducing the health impact of climate change at the review meeting of IRDR Pilot Study “Work Stream on Climate Change and Health”, a hybrid meeting held at Fudan University in Shanghai and online on 30 September 2025. This work stream is jointly led by CCOUC, as an Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) International Centre of Excellence (ICoE-CCOUC), and its sister unit at Fudan University, IRDR ICoE on Risk Interconnectivity and Governance on Weather/Climate Extremes Impact and Public Health (IRDR-ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE). Professor Haidong Kan, Deputy Director of ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE, gave a presentation on scientific findings on the links between climate change, air pollution, and public health in mainland China and East Asia, while Professor Xu Tang, Executive Director of ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE, presented proposed implementation strategies for the next phase, with a particular focus on Africa.

The review panel highly appreciated the pilot study and the two IRDR ICoEs will continue to work hand-in-hand in the next phase of the project, focusing particularly on engaging potential regional partners in the developing Africa and Latin America regions, so as to advance the responses to climate change and reduce health risks on a global scale.
