CCOUC Publishes Special Report on Dengue Risk Management Along the Laos–China Railway

On 28 May 2026, the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC), through its Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) International Centre of Excellence, published a special report titled “Managing Dengue Risk Along the Laos-China Railway: An HEDRM Approach”. Developed in close collaboration with GX Foundation, the report documents a dengue prevention and control intervention implemented along the Laos–China Railway.

The intervention, designed and implemented by GX Foundation, aimed to address the risks of vector-borne disease transmission along this major cross-border transportation corridor. Using the Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (HEDRM) framework, CCOUC examined the implementation and outcomes of a physical vector control package, including mosquito-killing lamps, bed nets and rapid diagnostic test kits deployed at railway stations and staff facilities.

The report documented encouraging outcomes, including no reported dengue infections among railway staff during the 12 months following the initial intervention, observable impacts on mosquito populations, and positive feedback from railway personnel and local communities regarding the usability of the equipment.

By translating practical intervention experience into research-based evidence, the report highlights the importance of integrating public health measures into disaster risk management and transport infrastructure operations. The publication also reflects CCOUC's commitment to interdisciplinary research and cross-sector collaboration in strengthening health resilience and managing infectious disease risks in cross-border settings.
