CCOUC participated in a Brazil meeting of the “After the End” research group funded by Wellcome Trust

CCOUC member Caroline Dubois participated in the meeting of After the End researchers, held in the region of Alagoas in Brazil from 30 November to 5 December 2025. The meeting was hosted by After the End team member Professor Debora Diniz of the University of Brasilia and her team at Anis Instituto de Bioéthica in Brazil. This in-person meeting brought together multidisciplinary researchers from Brazil, Hong Kong, UK, and Sierra Leone to learn about the work that Anis has conducted in the Alagoas region in the last 10 years about the Zika outbreak, lived experiences of communities and families affected by the outbreak, the intersectionality of time, emergencies, and justice.

The meeting included group discussions with women’s groups leading the fight for reparations and recognition from the Brazilian government, to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the community affected by Zika; a meeting with legal experts to learn about the progress made in the last 10 years; a meeting with researchers to learn about the aftermath of a mining disaster faced by the same community; and a field visit to outlying regions affected by Zika.

The After the End team also participated in the launch of a visual ethnographic exhibition of living memories about the life lived after Zika. The exhibition was produced by the Anis Instituto de Bioetica and the University of Brasilia, in collaboration with the association of Zika families Associação Famílias de Anjos do Estado de Alagoas (AFAEAL). The exhibition is a reflection on care, endurance, and the crisis that has never ended.
