(4.1) Enriching Knowledge Series for the Liberal Studies Curriculum: Urban Threat of Infectious Diseases (New)

Programme Overview

Infectious disease is always a high-profile health topic of our society. Ranging from malaria and dengue fever residing in developed countries to Ebola in Africa in 2014, societal panic is inevitable regardless of the size of outbreak.

Even in a developed setting such as Hong Kong, with good sanitary conditions and advanced medical technology, infectious diseases still widely exist. Various emerging and reemerging infectious diseases occur from time to time, bringing heavy disease burden to society.

This course will discuss the threat of infectious disease, as well as its global prevention and control, in order to assist teachers to prepare related teaching materials.

Programme Objectives

This course aims to enrich teachers' knowledge about urban threat of infectious diseases so as to enhance their ability in handling relevant issues in Liberal Studies lessons.

CHIU Check Pong is a local emergency nurse, he is working as a registered nurse for Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC). After joining Medecins Sans Frontieres in 2013, he has worked in various missions in providing medical humanitarian assistance to population in needs. He had been deployed in conflict areas in Pakistan and Yeman, Liberia during Ebola outbreak, as well as Bangladesh in response to the large influx of Rohingya refugees.
